Compliance is not commitment

The fact that people comply with your vision and work to make it happen doesn’t mean they are committed to the vision. There are multiple levels of commitment and compliance, and people will generally fall somewhere on this spectrum:

  • Commitment: Wants the vision and will make it happen by creating whatever structures are needed. Doesn’t play by the rules: they make the rules. Recognizes that The organization is the work.
  • Enrollment: Wants the vision and will make it happen by following the existing structures.
  • Genuine compliance: Really likes the vision and does what’s expected of them and more, within the existing structures. They are only committed to “being part of the team.”
  • Formal compliance: On the whole, sees the benefits of the vision. Does what’s expected, but nothing more.
  • Grudging compliance: Does not see the benefits of the vision. But, also, does not want to lose job. Does enough of what’s expected because they have to, but also lets it be known that they are not really on board.
  • Noncompliance: Does not see benefits of vision and will not do what’s expected. “I won’t do it; you can’t make me.”
  • Apathy: Neither for nor against vision. No interest. No energy. “Is it five o’clock yet?”

These are obviously archetypes, some people will be a mix or none of these.
