The context that produces original insight doesn’t belong to the company alone, or to the person alone. It comes from the relationship between the two.
The company brings its history, customers, capabilities, and competitive environment. The person brings their past experience, the other companies and industries they’ve seen, and the particular way they relate to this company and its environment. Original insight is what happens when the two meet. This is also why all good strategies are unique: no two relationships are the same.
Raw intelligence, by contrast, is close to a commodity. Companies hire it on the open market, and many people could fill any given role—and now a model anyone can use supplies it too. What’s scarce is the context.
This matters for AI. A model can be given everything a company has written down, though much of the context is tacit and never gets written down. But even a perfect record of the company can’t include the career you brought with you, or how that career interacts with this particular company. Part of the context always comes from you.
