Consultants (of the real kind) aren’t supposed to swoop in and fix the client’s problems. That would be a pair-of-hands consulting engagement, which is just outsourced labor.
Instead, consultants are supposed to help the client fix themselves. They do this by:
- Showing their expertise, thus inspiring the organization into an elevated state of being and operating.
- Offering perspective and, in so doing, helping the client see their problems for what they are (truth-seeking).
- Asking clients the right questions and embedding the client’s input into the work (which also helps to build rapport).
